Special volunteer opportunities have been scheduled during the week leading into the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 16. These will be in recognition of the holiday, as well as the concurrent National Service Day that was established by the U. S. Congress in 1993 to promote the ideals of volunteer service to communities. To register, contact Steve Zupcic as soon as possible.

Habitat for Humanity

Saturday, Jan. 7,10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Sunday, Jan. 8,10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Pitt volunteers will be working along side low-income individuals to rehabilitate existing housing. Habitat for Humanity creates safe and affordable housing world-wide. Pitt volunteers will be working at secure sites in Wilkinsburg and Braddock. Volunteers are welcome for all or part of the day.

Extra-Ordinary Tutoring

Tuesday, Jan. 10, noon – 1 p.m.

Pitt volunteers are needed on an ongoing basis to help urban children succeed at school. This after-school tutoring program has been operated by the East End Cooperative Ministry for 11 years. Volunteer commitment will be less than 2 hours per week at the site of the volunteer’s choice in East Liberty, Squirrel Hill or Larimer.

Family Friends for Children With Diabetes

Thursday, Jan. 12, noon – 1 p.m.

This is a national project being implemented in Pittsburgh by the University’s Generations Together program and Children’s Hospital. After training, volunteers will be asked to make weekly visits to their “family.” Volunteers need only be 55 years old with time, love and life experience to offer. Lunch will be provided at this on-campus orientation session.

Hunger Services Network office move

Saturday, Jan. 14, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Pitt volunteers will form the core of a crew to help the area’s coordinator of services to the hungry move their offices to a new location. Lunch will be provided. Volunteers are welcome for all or part of the day.

Shepherd Wellness Community

Saturday, Jan. 14; Sunday, Jan. 15; Monday, Jan. 16 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day

The Shepherd Wellness Community works to establish a community of support for persons affected by HIV. Pitt volunteers will be sorting clothing and other items for the community’s Second Time Around resale shop, as well as doing interior painting at the drop-in center. The non-sectarian Shepherd Wellness Community is sponsored by the Church of the Good Shepherd (Episcopal) in Hazelwood and its facilities are located in and very near the church, just 5 minutes from the Pitt campus. A light lunch and snacks will be provided. Volunteers are welcome to come for all or part of the day.
