Children’s book drive runs until Dec. 5

New and gently used children’s books are being collected through Dec. 5 for Jumpstart Pittsburgh, an AmeriCorps literacy program that pairs Pitt students with inner city children.

Some donated books will go to Jumpstart programs in the Hill District, Homewood, Lemington, Swissvale, Knoxville and Mt. Washington. Others will be donated to children in Petersfield, Jamaica,  through an ongoing relationship with the University’s Amizade Global Service-Learning Center.

Some books will be given to children and others will remain at the learning sites.

Jumpstart Pittsburgh, with 70 Pitt student tutors and a full-time staff of four, is a part of Pitt’s Student Volunteer Outreach.

Other University sponsors of the book collection drive are Amizade Global Service-Learning Center, America Reads Pittsburgh, America Reads Club, Mortarboard Public Service Program and the University Center for International Studies.

Collection boxes will be placed at the following locations:

  • 501 Cathedral of Learning;
  • Craig Hall lobby;
