Staniland appointed interim dean of GSPIA

Martin Staniland has been appointed interim dean of the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, effective March 13.

Provost James V. Maher, who made the appointment, said in a written statement: "I am very pleased that Professor Staniland has agreed to serve as interim dean until we have concluded a search for a permanent dean. I appreciate his willingness to step forward to help GSPIA define its future and to help the University reach its aspiration of having a truly fine Graduate School of Public and International Affairs." GSPIA's last permanent dean, Davis Bobrow, resigned Jan. 6 under pressure from Maher, who said he asked Bobrow to resign because the dean's management style and philosophy conflicted with his own. Retired Pitt administrator Edison Montgomery has been interim dean since then.

Staniland is a former director of GSPIA's economic and social development program and its international affairs program. He has written several books, including "American Intellectuals and African Nationalists, 1955-1970." He received his Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge, England, and has been at Pitt since 1976.
