THE CHANCELLOR'S COLUMN

This spring of 1995 marks the beginning of a time of change and transition for this University and for all of you who live and work here. It is also a time to reaffirm the nature of this good place, to pull together as a community, and to express an abiding sense of confidence and hope. Universities are lasting institutions, enduring for centuries. The University of Pittsburgh, now in its third century, continues in the proud tradition of its long history. It continues with a great sense of accomplishment and an even greater sense of aspiration. More so than ever, I believe this is a university on the ascent, eager for exhilarating and bold new things to happen. The quality of work on this campus — in the labs and classrooms, in one department and school after another — remains superb. Our core vital signs are healthy. There are challenges too that face this University, now and in the years ahead. And the task before us is to confront these challenges with wisdom and fortitude and enthusiastic purpose. None of this will happen in a vacuum. None of this will happen by itself. What is required is institution-wide support and encouragement. During this transition period, we are called to reaffirm the essence of what defines a community of scholars — constructive thought, and purposeful action. I am very proud to have served here as chancellor these past four years, as I will continue to feel so during the coming year. But ultimately this is your University. It belongs to all of you, to those who have preceded you, and to those who will follow. The University of Pittsburgh can become as magnificent an institution as you choose. In the immediate months ahead, I ask that we strengthen our spirit of cooperation, build upon our many strengths, and demonstrate the quality of character that has always been so vital to the continuing ascendancy of the University of Pittsburgh.

I thank all of you for your good will and hard work during this time of institutional change.

J. Dennis O'Connor
