Text of O'Connor response to Holland

Dear Jim:

I am writing in response to your letter of May 8, 1995 regarding the references to "committee input" contained in the brochure "Announcing Important Medical Benefits Changes" that recently was mailed to University faculty and staff.

Having reviewed the passages in question, I recognize and regret the distortion that stems from linking the first two sentences of the cited paragraph with my quotation. Although the sentences attributed to me accurately reflect my beliefs, they are placed out of context. I also concur in your judgment that the headline is misleading.

I believe that the intent of the cited paragraph was to accord members of the various committees due credit for the time and effort they expended in examining the University's health care situation. While the opinions of the advisory committees and of the University administration ultimately differed concerning HealthAmerica, faculty and staff input was given consideration throughout the decision-making process. However, the fact that such contributions had been made should have been expressed in a clearer way.

Sincerely,

J. Dennis O'Connor
