Five African-American teaching fellows chosen

Pitt's School of Education and the Pittsburgh Public Schools have selected five candidates for this year's African-American Teaching Fellowships.

They are:

Harold Grant, North Versailles;

Reginald Hickman, Monroeville;

John Strayhorn, Wilkinsburg;

Maurice Washington, Washington, Pa.,

and Laura Williams, Pittsburgh.

Funded mainly by the Pittsburgh Foundation, the fellowship is designed to increase the number of African-American teachers working in the Pittsburgh Public Schools.

Currently, the city school student population is about 53 percent African-American, but only 19 percent of the teachers are African-American.

The fellowship provides annual grants of up to $20,000 to persons pursuing teaching certification. Participants must have a bachelor's degree and be willing to teach for at least two years in the Pittsburgh Public Schools.
