PEOPLE OF THE TIMES

Chemistry's Sanford Asher has won the 1998 Lester W. Strock Award.

Presented by the Society for Applied Spectroscopy, the award is given annually by the New England section of the Society to an author or authors of an outstanding paper or series of papers in analytical spectroscopy which are collectively outstanding. Asher is being recognized for his UV Raman studies of biological structure. His research program at Pitt has involved development of new materials and the development of new spectroscopic techniques.

John T. Yates, R.K. Mellon Professor of Chemistry, has received two major awards from the American Chemical Society (ACS) recently.

Yates was honored as the 1998 recipient of the Pittsburgh Award of the ACS. He also was named the 1999 recipient of the ACS's Arthur W. Adamson Award for Distinguished Service in the Advancement of Surface Chemistry.

The Pittsburgh Award was established in 1932 by the Pittsburgh Section to recognize leadership in chemical affairs in the community. The Arthur W. Adamson Award was established in 1991 by the Occidental Petroleum Corp. The award consists of $5,000, an inscribed gold medal, and a bronze replica of the medal. The award is given to an individual who has made extensive contributions to the advancement of surface chemistry; Yates is only the sixth recipient of the award.

Karen March, assistant professor of nursing at the Bradford campus, has been appointed to a continuing education article review panel for the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) for 1998-99. She will review journal articles prior to their publication in one of AACN's two scholarly journals, American Journal of Critical Care and Critical Care Nurse.
