Senate Election Slate Set

This year’s election for president of the University Senate pits incumbent Nicholas G. Bircher, an associate professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine, against Carol K. Redmond, Distinguished Service Professor of Public Health. Both are former Senate vice presidents.

Candidates for Senate vice president for 2004-05 are: incumbent Irene Hanson Frieze, a professor of psychology, business administration and women’s studies, and Tracy M. Soska, continuing education director and a community organization and social administration program faculty member in the School of Social Work.

For Senate secretary, candidates are: Denise L. Howrie (Schiff), an associate professor of pharmacy and pediatrics, and incumbent Josephine E. Olson, a professor of business administration and of economics.

Senate officers will serve one-year terms beginning July 1.

The following are candidates for Faculty Assembly. The number of vacancies is indicated in parentheses.

Newly elected members serve the first year of their three-year terms on Faculty Assembly. During their second and third years, they serve on both the faculty-only Assembly and on Senate Council, which includes faculty, staff, students and administrators.

Arts and sciences (A&S) humanities division (2 vacancies): Robin R. Means Coleman, Shalini Puri, Deane L. Root and Francesca Savoia.

A&S natural sciences (2): Frank Beatrous, Juan Manfredi, Thomas A. Metzger, William Saunders and David Waldeck.

A&S social sciences (1): Daniel Romesberg and Werner Troesken.

Education (1): Don T. Martin and Glenn M. Nelson.

Engineering (2): John Robert Boston, Luis F. Chaparro, Michael J. Kolar and Sanjeev G. Shroff.

Public and international affairs (1): Sabina Deitrick and Jerome McKinney.

Social work (1): Catherine G. Greeno and Christina E. Newhill.

University Library System (1): Michael Bolam, James P. Cassaro, Leslie A. Hayden, Debora A. Rougeux and Phillip Wilkin.

Dental medicine (1): John M. Close and Angelina E. Riccelli.

Health and rehabilitation sciences (1): Thomas E. Platt and Michael Pramuka.

Health Sciences Library System (1): Philip Bergen and Ansuman Chattopadhayay.

Medicine (1): James L. Funderburgh, Drazen M. Jukic, Michael R. Pinsky, Raymond D. Pitetti and Guillermo Romero.

Nursing (1): Donna G. Nativio, Louise C. Waszak and Scott Weber.

Pharmacy (1): Denise L. Howrie (Schiff) and Susan J. Skledar.

Public health (1): Takis Benos and Nancy B. Sussman.

There are no openings this year for new Assembly members from the schools of business, information sciences and law.

Pitt’s Bradford, Greensburg, Johnstown and Titusville campuses elect their own representatives to Faculty Assembly.

Ballots for the 2004-05 Senate elections (including officers and Assembly members) are expected to be mailed to faculty next week and will be due in the Senate office, 1234 Cathedral of Learning, by April 27.
