New Scholarships Available at Bradford

Pitt’s Bradford campus has received a $19,000 nursing education grant from the Pennsylvania Higher Education Foundation to provide scholarships for students pursuing an associate’s degree in nursing.

The scholarships will be awarded based on need or academic performance, and the student must be a financial aid recipient.

Also, the students have to write a statement detailing how the scholarship has helped them achieve their goals.

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Foundation offers the nursing grants to help ease the shortage of nurses in the state of Pennsylvania. The grants are designed to help schools increase the enrollment of nursing students as well as to create alternative avenues for financial assistance that are not already available to schools.

District managers from Zippo Manufacturing Co. have created a scholarship at the Bradford campus that will benefit children and grandchildren of Zippo employees.

Former Bradford residents Stan Heckathorn and Andrew Maurey, who are district sales managers with Zippo, each made lead gifts to Pitt-Bradford to create the Zippo District Managers Scholarship Fund.

Heckathorn is a former vice president of business affairs at Pitt-Bradford, and Maurey had served on the UPB Advisory Board.

The scholarship fund also will be supported by annual contributions from 29 Zippo district managers. Thus far, the group has pledged more than $10,000. Howard Fesenmyer, chairman of Pitt-Bradford’s Complete the Campus Campaign, said that creating new scholarships is one of the key goals of the campaign.
