Oakland Street Paving to Begin

It’s summertime, and that means street resurfacing in Oakland is going strong.

Several streets near Pitt’s campus are expected to be re-paved in the next month, according to the city’s Department of Public Works.

During repaving, the usual traffic procedures for construction sites apply, said John Klinger, supervisor of the asphalt division of Public Works.” Our crews work from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.,” Klinger said. “Parking is prohibited during the re-paving. Signs are posted on the streets alerting motorists to what’s happening, and we tell people to move their vehicles before towing.”

In the case where the street is wide enough, traffic is restricted, “but we still allow vehicular traffic to flow through,” he said.

Oakland streets scheduled to be stripped and re-paved by city crews include: June 24, Bigelow Boulevard between North Craig Street and Centre Avenue; June 25, Allequippa Street from Robinson to Whiteridge streets; June 28, Allequippa from Centre Avenue to Sutherland Drive; June 29, Darragh Street from Allequippa to Terrace streets; June 30 – July 1, Centre Avenue between Reed and Elmore streets; July 9, Panther Hollow Road from the Panther Hollow Bridge to Greenfield Avenue; July 16-19, Forbes Avenue from Beeler to Plainfield streets.

The schedule is tentative because flexibility is needed for weather, Klinger said. “Rain will only delay [the projects] one day.”

Other Oakland streets are expected to be paved during the summer, but the schedule has not been established, Klinger said.
