Trustees Property and Facility Committee Approves Five New Renovation Projects

The Property and Facilities Committee of the University of Pittsburgh’s Board of Trustees has approved renovation projects within five Pitt facilities as part of ongoing investments to support the University’s strategic priorities. The projects, approved at the committee meeting held Nov. 3, carry a total cost of $43.91 million dollars and will create more than 250 construction and support jobs.

Details of the University’s approved projects follow:

  • Upgrading of facilities and infrastructure to support network broadcasts as required by the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Network contractual agreement. Among other additions, the project will include construction of a broadcast studio, offices and new mechanical and electrical infrastructure in the John M. and Gertrude E. Petersen Events Center. The project carries an estimated cost of $13.75 million.
  • Remodeling of the Schenley Quadrangle structure, plaza and garage. Among other renovations, the project will upgrade the structural system supporting the plaza and garage; replace the plaza deck with an environmentally friendly surface; and replace aging structural, electrical, mechanical and plumbing infrastructures. The project carries an estimated cost of $10.29 million.
  • Renovation of approximately 9,000 square feet of first-floor research space at the Center for Biotechnology and Bioengineering, located in South Oakland. The project will provide core facilities for new research programs and support existing and future research at the center and other adjacent buildings, among other upgrades. The project carries an estimated cost of $8 million.
  • Renovation to the ninth and 10th floors of the Chevron Science Center. The project will include interior renovations to 5,300 square feet on the ninth floor, which will provide two new interconnecting synthetic chemistry labs, an open lab space, a new faculty office, graduate student write-up area and new collaborative seating at the elevator lobby. The 10th-floor renovations remodels 4,100 square feet to provide a new chemistry lab, new break room, renovation of an existing faculty office, a new conference room and new collaborative seating at the elevator lobby. The project carries an estimated cost of $6 million.
  • Renovation of all common bathrooms on the 15 floors of student residential living within Litchfield Tower, building C. Among other upgrades, the project will bring a more efficient layout with an increased shower count as well as new ventilation systems to be connected to each existing bedroom. The project carries an estimated cost of $5.86 million.

The broadcast studio project at the Petersen Events Center will be funded through bond proceeds; the other projects will be paid for with plant funds.

Additionally, the committee also approved two lease agreements on behalf of the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and School of Medicine in the Bridgeside Point One Building, 100 Technology Drive, Oakland. Together, the two leases will generate nearly $147,000 in property and real estate taxes for the City of Pittsburgh.

Details of the University’s approved lease agreements follow:

  • Beginning Jan. 1, 2018, the School of Medicine will begin a 55-month lease for approximately 19,427 square feet of laboratory space in Bridgeside Point One. The facilities carry an initial annual rental of $659,050 to be adjusted annually.
  • Beginning Aug. 1, 2018, the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences will begin a five-year lease agreement for approximately 20,669 square feet of office and classroom space in Bridgeside Point One. The facilities carry an initial annual rental of $516,725.
