GSPH turns 50

Pitt faculty, staff, administrators and students celebrated the Graduate School of Public Health's golden anniversary Sept. 1 with a party on the school's lawn and the unveiling of a commemorative banner. The event kicks off a year-long celebration to honor individuals who excelled in and changed the face of public health, as well as to set challenges and goals for the future.

The school was founded in 1948, when community leaders recommended that a $13 million grant from the A.W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust be given to Pitt to establish a public health school. Those community leaders said that such a school would best serve the Pittsburgh community and improve the health and vitality of the city.
