Allegheny Observatory plans Oct. 2 open house

The annual Allegheny Observatory open house will be held Oct. 2, from 7 to 10 p.m. All three of the observatory's telescopes, including the 30-inch Thaw Refractor, will offer a view of the skies to the public. The Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh will make additional telescopes available on the front lawn. Visitors will be able to tour the observatory. Admission is free, but reservations are required. Reservations for tours and viewing can be made at half-hour increments between 7 and 10 p.m., by calling 321-2400. Once visitors enter the observatory, they are welcome to stay until closing.

The 86-year-old observatory is located at 159 Riverview Avenue, in Riverview Park. It is the country's largest scientific observatory located within a major city.
