Text of medical faculty resolution

The following is the text of the resolution approved at a special meeting of School of Medicine faculty, Sept. 9: Resolved, That the UPP in its present form is unacceptable to the medical school faculty because it provides:

* Inadequate participation of rank-and-file faculty representatives in its operations.

* Inadequate safeguards against unfair employment practices.

* Inadequate guarantees that our academic activities and academic mission will be preserved, and

* Inadequate protection of the patient-physician relationship and the faculty's commitment to the quality of medical care.

Therefore, the medical school faculty directs the Ad Hoc Oversight Committee to:

* Continue its negotiations with University, UPP and UPMCHS representatives, and

* Return to the faculty within 30 days with a UPP structure and documents that it can recommend for their approval.

Medical school administrators asked reporters from the University Times and other newspapers to leave the Scaife Hall meeting room minutes before the meeting got underway.

News media representatives had attended previous medical faculty meetings, including a Feb. 19 special session at which more than 500 medical faculty members and administrators from Pitt, UPMC Health System and UPP discussed the new unified practice plan.

Reporters were told that last week's meeting was for medical faculty only. However, professors from other schools attended.
