Pitt prof named to Catholic studies chair

Paula M. Kane, associate professor of religious studies at Pitt, was named the John C. Jr. and Lucine O'Brien Marous Chair in Contemporary Catholic Studies, a position considered to be rare at a public university.

"I don't know of any other chair in contemporary Catholic studies at a public university," said Alex Orbach, professor and former chairperson of Pitt's Department of Religious Studies and head of the search committee to fill the chair. "The Marous Chair gives academic credibility to the exploration of the Catholic experience in a way that cannot be done at a denominational school," said Orbach.

Kane was selected following a national search. She joined the Pitt faculty in 1990. She holds a bachelor's degree in history from Holy Cross College, and a master's degree and Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale University. Kane's interests include the history of women and Catholicism and the history of sacred architecture.

John C. Marous Jr., former CEO of Westinghouse and former chair of Pitt's Board of Trustees, and his wife Lucine endowed the chair in 1992.
