Shepherd L. Witman

Shepherd L. Witman, former director of Pittπs Office of Cultural and Educational Exchange, which in the 1950s and π60s coordinated programs for the Nationality Rooms, the Pittsburgh Council for International Visitors and the study abroad office, died Nov. 11, 1998. He was 92.

Witman served on the faculties of Yale University, the University of Omaha, Rutgers University and Western Reserve University before coming to Pitt in 1958, where he worked until retiring in 1971. He earned his Ph.D. in international law at Yale.

During the 1950s, Witman served as an American staff member of the first UNESCO International Adult Education Seminar in Austria; as a consulting specialist to the Frankfurt Institute for European Politics and Economics, Frankfurt, Germany; and as director of the first International Residential Seminar, held at Bryn Mawr, Pa., and its counterpart seminar, held in Munich, Germany. He was a member of the American Political Science Association, the American Association of University Professors, the American Association of International Law and the American Academy of Political and Social Science. Witman was awarded the Chevalier Cross of the Legion of Honor from the French government for contributions to international understanding.
