President of Turkey honored

Chancellor Mark Nordenberg conferred an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree on Suleyman Demirel, president of the Republic of Turkey, at an April 21 academic convocation in Carnegie Music Hall. Demirel has made higher education a top priority for his country, guiding the establishment of more than 25 universities over the past decade, many of them in provinces with no other institutions of higher learning. He also has helped to establish a partnership with the UPMC Health System through which Pitt medical school faculty provide post-graduate training to physicians from Ankara Numune Hospital in Turkey's capital.
