Marathon street closings to be detailed

To assist area commuters, AAA, PennDOT, WPXI-TV and UPMC Health System/City of Pittsburgh Marathon officials are teaming up to provide information on street closings and alternate routes into and around the city on marathon day, May 2.

More than 4,000 runners are expected for the combined Tri-State Health System 5K Run/Walk, Mellon Bank Relay Team Competition and the marathon.

The events will begin at 8:15 a.m. in front of the City-County Building on Grant Street, Downtown. The finish line is in Point State Park. The marathon is run entirely on city streets. Some streets will be closed to vehicles for portions of the day.

Other activities in the city that day include the Pittsburgh Pirates 1:35 p.m. home game at Three Rivers Stadium and a possible 2 p.m. Pittsburgh Penguins playoff game at the Civic Arena.

Marathon officials are providing a race course map, listing approximate street closing and re-opening times and course-crossing times, as well as information on alternate routes into and around the city. For information, call 412/647-RUNN or access: http://www.upmc.edu/pghmarathon.

From 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on May 1, WPXI-TV will host a phone bank to assist callers with street closing information and travel plans. During that time only, people can call 412/333-WPXI for information.

PennDOT is providing information on major state road construction projects that will affect traffic flow on marathon day. For information, access: http://www.penndotpgh.com.
