Building a room

The Japanese Nationality Classroom, to be housed in room 317 Cathedral of Learning, will be dedicated July 25. The room’s 87 components were built with traditional Japanese tools in Kyoto, Japan, dismantled and shipped in a 40-foot container to Pittsburgh.

Japanese artisans and local carpenters are reconstructing architect Hirokazu Nagase’s design, which replicates a Minka farmhouse structure.
