Free depression screenings offered

Mental health professionals from 13 area hospitals, including Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, will provide information on the signs and symptoms of depression, as well as free depression screenings, as part of National Depression Screening Day, Oct. 10.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, depression strikes more than 17 million Americans annually. Depression is characterized by persistent feelings of sadness or irritability; changes in sleep and appetite; loss of interest in daily activities, trouble in concentrating, and thoughts of death and suicide.

Last year, nearly 400 western Pennsylvanians participated in the screening program. Of that total, about 270 individuals were referred for further evaluation.

For specific times and sites for local screenings call United Mental Health at 391-3820.
