PEOPLE OF THE TIMES

Anna Roman-Koller, assistant chair in Pitt's Department of Pathology, and Kenneth Sims, KDKA-TV photojournalist, each have been awarded the College of General Studies (CGS) Distinguished Alumni Award. The annual award has been presented since 1989 to CGS graduates who have made a difference in the community, their profession or the University.

Charles Clifton, Johnstown campus professor of English, and Bernard John Poole, John-town campus associate professor of education and instructional technology, were two of 120,000 teachers to be listed in "Who's Who Among American's Teachers." The Pitt-Johnstown faculty members were nominated by one or more former students who themselves were listed in either "Who's Who Among American High School Students" or "The National Dean's List." United Cerebral Palsy of Pittsburgh (UPC) awarded Thomas Detre, senior vice chancellor for Health Sciences, the 1996 Policy Maker Award. UPC of Pittsburgh presents the award to a public policy maker who has continued to support disability issues in the public forefront. Detre established and influenced major research efforts and services for rehabilitation, assistive technology and medicine.

Jon B. Suzuki, dean of the School of Dental Medicine, has been elected chair of the American Dental Association's Council on Scientific Affairs.

The council is responsible for monitoring and addressing scientific and critical issues related to dentistry and making appropriate recommendations to the dental profession at large. Savio L-Y. Woo, director of the Musculoskeletal Research Center and professor of mechanical engineering, has been elected into the Mathematics/Physics Division of the Academia Sinica, the Chinese counterpart of the National Academy of Science. It is the highest institute of academic learning in China.

His research centers on the growth, development, aging and healing of soft tissues, specifically ligaments and tendons.
