Coach Majors steps down

Pitt Athletics Director Steve Pederson is expected to name a successor to head football coach John Majors as early as next week. Majors, who had one of the longest tenures among active college football coaches in the nation, announced his resignation on Nov. 25. As a coach, Majors amassed 184 wins, tying him with former University of Texas coach Darrell Royal at 22nd on the NCAA's all-time coaching victories list. Although Majors resigned as head football coach, he will remain at the University as a special assistant to Chancellor Mark Nordenberg. Among the candidates for the vacant coaches job, according to published reports, is former Pitt football great Matt Cavanaugh. Now the quarterbacks coach for the San Francisco 49ers, Cavanaugh was Pitt's quarterback under Majors during the 12-0 national championship season in 1976.
