Theatre arts taking Shakespeare to schools
Pitt's Department of Theatre Arts Shakespeare-in-the-Schools production of "Hamlet" began touring schools in southwestern Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland and West Virginia this week and will continue through April 25.
Performed by a small company of professional actors using full sets and costumes, the production is specifically designed to engage and cultivate the imaginations of young people.
One adaptation of "Hamlet" is geared for elementary students, the other for teenagers. After each performance, a "talk-back" session gives the audience an opportunity to ask questions.
An interactive presentation called "Shakespeare for Small People" also is offered for children in kindergarten through the third grade.
The performances are expected to reach more than 32,000 students.
