Sports medicine gets workshop funds

Sports medicine researchers at Pitt have received a $70,000 grant from the Foundation for Sports Medicine Education and Research to conduct a workshop on "The Role of Proprioception and Neuromuscular Control on the Management of Knee and Shoulder Conditions." The workshop is set for Aug. 22-24 at the University. Workshop participants will summarize their work on specific topics related to joint proprioception (the awareness of position, strength and resistance in relation to the body in space) and neuromuscular contributions to knee and shoulder stability.

Freddie Fu, medical director of the Center for Sports Medicine, and Scott Lephart, director of Pitt's neuromuscular research laboratory, will co-chair the workshop.

Information on the workshop and related research is available by calling 624-7886 or on the World Wide Web at http://www.pitt,edu/~neurolab.
