'Christmas in April' volunteers needed

Pitt's Bradford campus (UPB) Staff Association needs volunteers for its annual "Christmas in April" project on June 7.

The project, in which volunteers paint and/or repair a home in the Bradford area, is called Christmas in April after a similar program in Texas. Since Bradford's weather usually is too cold for working outside in April, however, the UPB project is routinely delayed until June.

This will be the third year for Christmas in April, according to project coordinator Lori Johnson, a staff member in UPB's Office of Auxiliary Services. The first year 17 members of the UPB community worked on the project. Last year eight people volunteered.

"This year, I don't know what house we're assigned to, but we have about 10 people signed up," Johnson said.

Individuals and businesses in the Bradford area donate money and materials for the project. Homeowners, usually senior citizens who are no longer able to maintain their homes, apply for assistance through local social service agencies. A committee selects the homes on which the volunteers will work.

Staff, faculty or students interested in helping with UPB's Christmas in April project can register by calling Holly Spittler, 362-7657.
