PEOPLE OF THE TIMES

Barbara Warnick, professor of communication at the University of Washington, has been hired as the chair of the Department of Communication, School of Arts and Sciences.

Warnick specializes in communication and rhetorical theory; argumentation, and the criticism of new media. She joined the faculty at Washington in 1980 and served as communication department chair as well as graduate program coordinator and undergraduate program adviser.

Among Warnick’s extensive publications are her most recent books, “Critical Literacy in a Digital Era: Technology, Rhetoric and the Public Interest” and the 4th edition of “Critical Thinking and Communication: The Use of Reason in Argument.”

Her current articles include “Web-based Memorializing After September 11: Toward a Conceptual Framework,” upcoming in the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, and “Online Ethos: Source Credibility in an ‘Authorless Environment’” in American Behavioral Scientist.

Warnick also has served as editor of the Quarterly Journal of Speech, a National Communication Association journal.

She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

Warnick succeeds interim chair Donald B. Egolf, who will continue his research and teaching as a faculty member in the department.

The School of Pharmacy has announced a number of recent faculty honors.

Kim Coley, associate professor of pharmacy and therapeutics, has been invited to serve on the selection panel for the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Foundation Pharmacy Practice Research Award through May 2007.

Scott Mark, assistant professor of pharmacy and therapeutics, has been invited to serve a two-year term on the ASHS Foundation research advisory panel.

The panel consists of pharmacy research experts who help guide the foundation’s research efforts and who assist the board and staff in establishing priorities and identifying funding opportunities.

Ted Rice, associate professor of pharmacy and therapeutics, is chair-elect of the ASHP section of clinical specialists and scientists.

The ASHP section membership include pharmacists interested in advancing science and providing scientific and clinical specialty practice leadership.

Kristine Schonder, assistant professor of pharmacy and therapeutics, has received the Faculty Member of the Year Award from the pharmacy school’s American Pharmacists Academy of Student Pharmacists.

Katherine D. Seelman, associate dean of disability programs and professor of rehabilitation sciences and technology at the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, was presented the 2006 Disability Pride Award this week.

The award was given July 19 by the Three Rivers Center for Independent Living (TRCIL), at its Disability Pride Day dinner. It recognizes “those who have provided exemplary support to the disability community in western Pennsylvania.”

TRCIL’s mission is to empower people with disabilities to enjoy self-directed, meaningful lives by proving outstanding consumer services and advocating for community change.

In addition to Seelman, the award went to the Westinghouse Electric Co. for its sustained support of TRCIL’s efforts during the United Way Day of Caring.
