Campus-wide wireless on its way

Pitt will launch Wireless PittNet, the University’s campus-wide wireless Internet service, tomorrow, Dec. 8, by activating wireless network service in five campus buildings.

Over the next 18 months, wireless network service will be installed in buildings across the 132-acre Pittsburgh campus and the four regional campuses.

A technology fair will be held noon-4 p.m. Dec. 8 in the William Pitt Union Assembly Room to demonstrate the equipment and services available.

The first five buildings to be “turned on” will be Allen Hall, Thaw Hall, Old Engineering Hall, the Space Research Coordination Center and Nuclear Physics Laboratory.

Pitt’s wireless service is restricted to members of the University community.

The schedule for implementation of wireless network service has been divided into two phases. The following identifies the locations and approximate order in which wireless service will be made available during each phase.

Phase I: Through June 2007

Benedum, Chevron, Posvar, Law, Mervis, Sennott Square, Parran/Crabtree, William Pitt Union, Hillman, LRDC, Scaife, Starzl Biomedical Science Tower, BST 2, Craig, Salk, Clapp/Langley/Crawford.

Phase II: July 2007-June 2008

Cathedral of Learning, regional campuses, BST 3, University Place, Alumni, Music, Frick Fine Arts, Trees, Victoria, Information Sciences, Thackeray, David Lawrence, Petersen Events Center, Gardner Steel Conference Center, Fitzgerald Field House and the residence halls.

Dates for other buildings will be announced as they are determined, according to the Pitt Help Desk.
