Feick named UCIS director

Pitt professor Lawrence Feick has been named senior director of International Programs and director of Pitt’s University Center for International Studies (UCIS), effective Aug. 1.

Feick, a professor of business administration in the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business, teaches marketing management and international marketing.

Feick earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and master’s degree in agricultural economics at the University of Delaware and a Ph.D. in agricultural economics at Penn State.

A Katz faculty member for 25 years, Feick was an associate dean from 1989 to 1996 and was interim dean in 2005-06.

Feick directed the International Business Center (which is jointly sponsored by Katz and UCIS) from 1999 to 2005, where he oversaw a variety of international programs, including Pitt’s Plus3 joint business and engineering program that won the 2005 Andrew Heiskell Award for innovation in international education. He noted that his IBC experience has familiarized him with UCIS. “Among the advantages and attractions, I know the people and respect them,” he said.

Acknowledging former UCIS directors William Brustein and Burkart Holzner, Feick said he considers the opportunity to succeed them an honor. “They were phenomenal people and did great things in this area,” he said.

Feick said he is excited about the opportunity to deal with the most important issues facing the nation and helping the University develop responses to them. Of the cutting-edge issues of the day, “Almost everything is global: sustainability, hunger, war, HIV, terror, avian flu — all are inherently global,” he said.

Feick has served as a consultant to a number of firms including Eastman Kodak, General Motors, and Newsweek. He has done extensive executive teaching, including programs for Samsung Electronics, Audi and Cheil Communications, and has developed a train-the-trainers program on the use of simulations, games and case studies in teaching marketing concepts. He is co-author of Country Manager, an international marketing simulation game, and has published articles in a number of professional journals.

He has additional international experience as a visiting professor at the University of Augsburg (Germany), Czech Management Center (Czech Republic), International Management Center (Hungary), Comenius University (Slovak Republic) and Universidad Santa Maria (Ecuador).

“I have great confidence that Dr. Feick will provide thoughtful academic leadership to UCIS and insight on the University’s concerted efforts on international programs,” stated Pitt Provost James V. Maher in a prepared release. “He possesses the necessary experience and integrity to build on the center’s strengths and priorities and is keenly aware of the importance of global awareness and experience for our students.”
