African studies graduate certificate approved

An African studies graduate certificate has been approved.

The graduate certificate will provide students the opportunity to acquire a critical base of knowledge and a fundamental grounding in African studies through exposure to the major areas of research and knowledge on Africa as taught in their individual programs of study.

Students will complete courses related to their primary area of interest/specialization, and demonstrate proficiency in an African or related language. The program is open to students enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program at Pitt.

Also, the African studies program has received a two-year, $165,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to support curriculum enhancement; language development; strengthening of opportunities for students’ experiences in Africa; nourishment of an Africanist intellectual community, and collaborative outreach programs with the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh.
