Prosthetics/orthotics program launched

The School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS) is launching a new master’s of science degree program in prosthetics and orthotics in its Department of Rehabilitation Science and Technology.

Prosthetics and orthotics involves the evaluation, fabrication and custom fitting of artificial limbs and orthopedic braces.

The five-term, 66-credit program is designed to meet National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE) standards and to prepare students to take the American Board of Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics exams.

The school is seeking approval from NCOPE, the accreditation body for orthotics and prosthetics educational programs, to admit students next fall. Accreditation can take place after students have been admitted and after a self-study and a site visit by NCOPE.

SHRS is seeking a class size of approximately 16 students and will be hiring new faculty certified in orthotics and prosthetics as well as using existing faculty to teach in the program.

Information is available online at www.shrs.pitt.edu.
