Tales From the Scales: 12-week weight race reaches midpoint

They’re heading around the mid-pole for the far turn!

In spite of wintry weather and short days that make many want to hibernate, 263 teams of Pitt employees University-wide began the 12-week MyHealth Weight Race in January and now are at the midpoint of the competition to see which teams can best reach their weight loss and weight management goals.

Their initial plans in many cases have been tempered by day-to-day realities. Strategies have been tweaked and their willpower has been tested — often by Girl Scout cookies that for some are just too tough to resist. Regardless of whether they’ve gained or lost, this week they face the scales for the second of three official weigh-ins being conducted by graduate students in the Department of Health and Physical Education. Teams self-report their progress weekly between the official checkpoints and team standings are being posted online weekly at www.hr.pitt.edu/fitness/WeightRaceStandings.htm.

The final weigh-ins will take place April 15-18 as the competition concludes.

The five teams featured in the Feb. 7 University Times have had mixed results, but members’ resolve to finish the race and maintain healthy habits beyond the end of the competition remains strong.

We’ll check in with them again in the April 17 issue. Will Pitt have a leaner, healthier workforce come April? Stay tuned. …
