Food drive launched

Pitt’s annual Partnership for Food drive will collect non-perishable food items throughout April to help restock the shelves of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

For more than a decade, the University has ranked among the 10 most successful Pittsburgh-area employers in the annual spring food drives. Over the years, contributions from the University have totaled more than 1.5 million units of food.

For the second year, donations will go twice as far: The Office of the Chancellor and the Office of Community Relations have issued a challenge, promising to double the total amount of non-perishable food items donated in this year’s collection.

“One child in four in the City of Pittsburgh is in danger of going hungry,” said Steve Zupcic of Community Relations. “The addition of the Chancellor’s Challenge to the annual Pitt’s Partnership for Food drive is significant evidence of our University’s commitment to addressing this disturbing problem. I hope that all members of the University community do their part in leveraging this matching contribution.”

Items such as peanut butter, tuna, meats, baby formula, chunky-type soups and stews especially are needed. Also welcome are dry cereal and household items including paper products and cleaners.

Home canned or home packaged foods cannot be accepted.

Those needing bulk food pickups should contact Zupcic at 412/624-7709.
