For the birds

peregrine 1The Cathedral of Learning’s resident female peregrine, Dorothy, peers into the Babcock Room on the Cathedral’s 40th floor Tuesday morning as National Aviary and Pennsylvania Game Commission officials prepare to examine and band her three chicks with state and federal ID tags.

The baby peregrines hatched April 30 in the nesting box atop the Cathedral. To make the exams less stressful for birds and humans alike, Dorothy was brought inside to watch as the chicks — two males and a female — got their checkups.

Land Management Group supervisor Doug Dunkerley and Allegheny County Wildlife Conservation officer Beth Fife of the state game commission, attach a band to Dorothy’s female chick.peregrine 2peregrine 3
