Printer cartridges go green

Printer cartridge recycling boxes are popping up across the Pittsburgh campus as Pitt’s Surplus Property Department expands its cartridge recycling program.

Among the locations where recycling boxes can be found are the Cathedral of Learning (ground floor), Alumni Hall, Posvar Hall, Chevron Science Center, Scaife Hall (outside Copy Cat) and the Information Sciences Building.

The cartridges are sold to a local recycling service to be reused or recycled. Surplus Property manager Tom Heidkamp said Pitt receives between 25 cents and $2.50 per cartridge, which is used to support the recycling program. He said the program accepts all types of cartridges and asked donors to place the used unit in the plastic bag in which the new cartridge arrived, if possible.

Since the program’s inception, Pitt has collected some 2,000 cartridges.
