Pitt employees volunteer in annual United Way Day of Caring

united wayAt top: Marlon Jones, data manager in the Graduate School of Public Health’s Department of Biostatistics, helps to clean and fix up Peoples Oakland, a recovery program for those who suffer from mental illness and substance abuse. Jones was one of more than 300 Pitt staff and faculty members who volunteered during this year’s Day of Caring.

Second: Sherry Shrum, far right, leads a team of volunteers she assembled from her co-workers in the Office of Public Affairs for Pitt’s United Way Day of Caring on Sept. 26. Under the supervision of the Facilities Management grounds crew, the team spent the day helping Oakland Planning and Development Corp. to transform an abandoned plot along Lawn Street in South Oakland into a community park.

Third: Lois Kepes of the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs/Economics Library helps to clean medical equipment at Global Links, an organization that ships surplus medical supplies and equipment to needy clinics worldwide.

Bottom: Katie Rossi, executive assistant in the Office of the Vice Dean, School of Medicine, helps to remove and install new bedding at Family House, the Oakland-based organization that provides temporary housing to families of patients at area hospitals.
