AAAC honors 5 faculty, staff

The African American Alumni Council will honor five Pitt faculty and administrators with the Sankofa Award Oct. 26. The award honors members of the University community who have exhibited outstanding educational support and service to students of African descent.

Honorees are Toi Derricotte, professor of English, award-winning poet and co-founder of Cave Canem, a workshop/retreat for African-American poets; Laurence A. Glasco, professor of history and author, whose research primarily has focused on race and ethnicity; Kathy W. Humphrey, vice provost and dean of students, who established Pitt’s RISE: Reaching Inside Your Soul for Excellence mentoring program; Sandra Murray, professor in the School of Medicine’s Department of Cell Biology and Physiology, who was in part responsible for developing the first physician’s assistant program in sub-Saharan Africa, and Betsy Porter, director of the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid, who implemented a strategic recruitment and marketing plan titled “Fostering Distinction and Diversity,” which exceeded enrollment goals.
