SAC to offer CPR, first aid classes

One-session CPR and basic first aid training classes, sponsored by the Staff Association Council (SAC) through Pitt’s Student Health Services, are being offered to Pitt employees and their families.

Courses include:

• Heart saver with AED, April 9, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., 360 Benedum Hall. Fee: $25.

The heart saver/AED (automatic external defibrillator) class covers adult and pediatric CPR techniques and foreign body airway obstruction, as well as how to operate the AED. Completing the course earns two-year CPR certification.

• Health care provider course, April 16, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., 360 Benedum Hall. Fee: $30.

This class covers similar content to the above course, but primarily is designed for individuals already in or planning careers in the health care field. It also carries two-year CPR certification.

• Basic first aid, April 16, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., 361 Benedum Hall. Fee: $25.

This class includes: care of cuts, scrapes, bruises, bleeding, shock, muscle and joint pain/fracture, sudden illness, poisoning and heat- and cold-related illness. Completion of the class carries two-year first aid certification.

CPR instruction is provided by certified American Heart Association instructors, who also will discuss disease and injury prevention. The basic first aid class will be led by certified American Red Cross safety and first aid instructors.

The deadline to register and pay is March 29. Registration forms are available at the SAC office, 925 William Pitt Union (4-4236), or by contacting Brittany Guthrie, SAC’s safety and security committee co-chair, at 4-9780.

There are two payment options:

• Deliver or mail a registration form with a personal check payable to the University of Pittsburgh (include Social Security number on the check) to: Guthrie, 648 Benedum, or Jim Lyle, 364 Benedum.

• Submit a sign-up sheet and interdepartmental transfer to account #04-0615-4500-25162, to Guthrie or Lyle.
