Check out three exhibits this fall at the University Art Gallery

The University Art Gallery in the Frick Fine Arts building isn’t the only place to see works of art this fall, although there is plenty to see there.

The gallery will hold a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 12 in honor of three exhibits that will run through March 1, 2024. Light food and refreshments will be provided. The event is free and open to all; no registration required.

The three exhibits are:

The Kingdom of This World Reimagined: Inspired by Alejo Carpentier’s mytho-historical book, “The Kingdom of this World (originally published in 1949), an international cohort of artists, each with ties to the Caribbean, responds to the innovative retelling of the extraordinary, true events of Black liberation, struggle, and spirituality in colonialism’s wake. This exhibition was curated by Lesley A. Wolff, Assistant Professor, Art & Design, University of Tampa. This exhibition will be staged across two venues: the University Art Gallery (UAG) at Pitt and the Carlow University Art Gallery. Open now.

Agua Firme: Through video, sound and sculpture, artists iliana emilia García and Scherezade García explore how maritime culture shaped the historical and social construction of Las Americas. Agua Firme is a specially commissioned site-specific installation in the Gallery’s historic Rotunda. Open now.

Printing Culture: Gráfica de Puerto Rico, 1958-63: This student-curated exhibition showcases a selection of original screen-printed posters from the instituto de cultura puertorriqueña (ICP). Produced between 1958 and 1963, the posters were designed by some of the leading graphic artists of the time and reflect the vibrant and evolving culture of Puerto Rico during this period. The show explores themes of identity, culture, and the graphic arts. The ICP posters are drawn from the Walter and Martha Leuba Collection in the University of Pittsburgh’s Archives & Special Collections. The exhibition opens Oct. 12.
