Concert celebrates Ukrainian culture and music

Ukrainian music historian and concert pianist Taras Filenko, who received his Ph.D. from Pitt Music, will lead an evening celebrating Ukrainian culture on April 18 at the Frick Fine Arts Building.

Filenko and Jennifer Orchard of the Pittsburgh Symphony will perform Michael Minard's, “Ukraine Triptych for Piano and Violin.” Completed in March 2022, it is possibly the first American piece honoring Ukraine to be written after the Feb. 24, 2022 invasion of the country by Russia.

The concert also will include Pitt students from Ukraine singing folks songs, and pieces of classical, romantic, and modern music by Ukrainian composers. The event, from 4:30 to 7 p.m., will begin with refreshments and an opportunity to learn about Ukraine-focused academic, cultural, and humanitarian projects at Pitt and in Pittsburgh.
