Day of Giving will benefit units throughout the University

Money raised at Pitt Day of Giving next week will be used to benefit schools, programs, student organizations and more, including the Employee Emergency Fund established last year.

Staff Council President Lindsay Rodzwicz told Senate Council on Feb. 15 that the fund, which launched in October, has dispersed $76,800 to 62 employees. Eligible Pitt employees from all campuses can apply for financial assistance of up to $1,500 when experiencing an immediate and substantial financial need. (Read more about the Employee Emergency Fund here.)

During the eighth annual Pitt Day of Giving on Feb. 27, students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents and friends are encouraged to give to the areas of the University they love most and to share their Pitt story.

You also can add your photo to the 2024 Pitt Day of Giving Mosaic, and tell why you’re proud to be a part of the Pitt Community, why you’re supporting a specific fund or what your fondest memory of Pitt is.

A variety of incentives and challenges throughout the day will add extra funds to specific groups if the goal is met.

For instance, if 2,370 faculty, staff and retirees make a gift on Pitt Day of Giving, the chancellor’s senior staff will give $5,000 in bonus funds to the area that receives the most gifts from employees. Why 2,370? Because Pitt was founded 237 years ago.

Last year, 9,450 donors from 50 states, 35 countries and six continents gave $2.4 million to the University. These gifts allowed five campuses, 17 schools and colleges and many student organizations to fund priority projects, including relieving student debt, funding scholarships and launching innovative programs.

How to get involved

  • Philanthropy Mini Fest is back from noon-2 p.m. Feb. 26: Head to the William Pitt Union Ballroom for free food, activities, swag and chances to support your favorite participating organizations.

  • Pitt Pantry Donation and Sock Giveaway. Bring a nonperishable item for the Pitt Pantry to Alumni Hall Connolly Ballroom between 10 a.m. Feb. 27 and the end of the PDoG Party to receive a free pair of Pitt Day of Giving socks (while supplies last).

  • Faculty and Staff Stations, where you can ask questions, make a donation and pick up a free duffel bag — will be open across campus from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Feb. 27. Station locations include the PAA Lobby, WPU Lobby, Scaife Hall Food Court, Cathedral Commons Room, and home plate in Posvar Hall.

  • Find-A-Panther on the Oakland campus. Search for a plush Pitt Panther on Feb. 27. Once you find one of the keepsakes, scan the QR code attached to reveal a spotlight of a Pitt graduate. Through that alum’s support, you can choose any organization participating in Pitt Day of Giving to receive $50.

  • The Pitt Day of Giving Party starts at 5:30 p.m. in the Alumni Hall Connelly Ballroom, and the Hot Bunz food truck will be outside on Tennyson Street. Stay and watch the Pitt Men’s Basketball team as they play Clemson.

  • The C4C Karaoke Toast is from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Feb. 27 in the The Understory (B50 Cathedral of Learning). The Center for Creativity will celebrate the day with vintage karaoke and warm, crisp bread with an array of creative toppings. All Pitt students, faculty, and staff are welcome to come sing, eat and share the fun.
