School of Education Dean Valerie Kinloch will moderate a panel discussion on “Black Women, Black Feminism: Learning from the Intersections” on Nov. 7 at Posvar Hall.
The panel will feature four female professors of color — Cynthia Dillard (University of Georgia), Venus Evans-Winters (Illinois State University), Kirsten T. Edwards (University of Oklahoma) and Olga Welch (Duquesne University) — and Ciora Thomas, founder of SisTers PGH and a transgender activist.
The discussion will “underscore the urgency of black feminist theory in research and practice. An additional and related aim is centering black girls’ and women’s experiences in urban education conversations,” according to an announcement about the event.
It also will serve as an opportunity to remember Helen S. Faison, who was the first black person and woman to serve as the Pittsburgh Public Schools superintendent.
The panel discussion is from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Nov. 7 at 4303 Posvar Hall.
