Gallagher’s 2022 pay ranked in middle of pack for public colleges

Former Chancellor Patrick Gallagher ranked between 40th and 45th for base pay and total compensation in 2022 among public university leaders.

Earlier this month, the Chronicle of Higher Education released its annual report on how much public college presidents are paid.

For 2022, Gallagher’s base pay was $688,429 and his total compensation was $845,673. Current Pitt Chancellor Joan Gabel was paid a similar amount in 2022 at the University of Minnesota — $673,012 in base pay and $840,427 in total compensation.

Overall, Texas Tech University system Chancellor Tedd Mitchell earned the most in total compensation at $2.5 million (with just over $1 million in base pay), and Michael Ray Williams of the University of North Texas System had the highest base pay at $1.37 million.

Only nine public college leaders in 2022 topped the $950,000 base salary Gabel was given when she started at Pitt in July. Former Pitt Board of Trustees Chair Doug Browning said when Gabel was hired that it became clear that Pitt’s executive salaries had fallen behind its peers.
