Heinz Chapel Choir raising funds for new choral work

Heinz Chapel Choir is celebrating its 80th anniversary by commissioning a new choral work by Bob Chilcott to honor the legacy of the late John Goldsmith, who directed the choir from 1989-2014.

The composition will combine Charles Bennett’s poem “When Spring Comes Walking” intertwined with a verse of “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.” The new work will receive its premiere at 3 p.m. April 14 at the choir’s 80th Anniversary Concert.

Chilcott is a British choral composer, conductor and singer. His publisher, Oxford University Press, has committed to publishing the piece, which will be dedicated to Goldsmith, who died in 2017.

The a cappella choir, which has been at Pitt since 1938, has launched a campaign to raise money for the commission fee. Visit  Heinz Chapel Choir’s Engage Pitt page to see how to donate.
