The 2019 Humanities at Work Conference on March 27, sponsored by the Department of Linguistics, will highlight cross-disciplinary work between humanities and other disciplines in and outside of academia.

The theme this year is: Humanities at Work in the Community, Health and Tech Industry: Linguistics Paving the Way, and draws on the work of the Department of Linguistics’ Internship Program and its Humanities in Health Initiative, which are partially funded by a Pitt Seed grant. 

The conference — from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the University Club — will focus on the role of the humanities in training of students across various disciplines, with presentations by current linguistics interns and alumni. Tech industry officials, such as Amazon and Uber, and community partners will speak about the importance of humanities and cross-disciplinary training in their industries.

Provost Ann Cudd will give opening remarks and the keynote speaker is John C. Knapp, 13th president of Washington & Jefferson College and a professor of religion in the college’s Department of Philosophy. Find a full schedule here.

The goals of this meeting are designed to align with the strategic Plan for Pitt, especially with regards to the creation of an institutional environment and culture that celebrates interdisciplinary collaborations and fosters relationships.

The event is co-hosted by the Department of Family Medicine, School of Computing and Information, David Berg Center for Ethics and Leadership and Department of Ob/Gyn & Reproductive Sciences.
