In 1965, George Barbour, a Pittsburgh native and Pitt alum, marched 54 miles alongside civil rights activists on the way from Selma to Montgomery, Ala., covering the event as the first Black reporter for KDKA radio.
On Feb. 11, the University Library System and Office for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion will present a screening of Ken Love’s documentary “George Barbour: Journalist.” A discussion of the historical influence of Black journalists, featuring Laurence Glasco, an associate professor in Pitt’s Department of History, will follow the screening.
The documentary features a compilation of interviews with Barbour talking about his career leading up to and including the seminal Selma-to-Montgomery march led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and John Lewis.
The online screening and discussion are from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 11. Registration is required. An access link to the event will be sent to the email provided following completed registration.
