Pitt Magazine features “August Wilson’s World” in the most recent edition. The article looks at how the playwright’s work “is renowned for embodying key elements of 20th-century America. His actual life — in which Pittsburgh was centerstage — did too, which is why Kornelia Tancheva felt there was no better home than Pitt for his works.”

While most of Wilson’s plays were set in Pittsburgh, they have received international acclaim. “August Wilson Around the World,” co-hosted by the Center for African Studies, will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 13 in Archives & Special Collections Instruction Room, on the third floor of Hillman Library.

Panelists include:

Laurence Glasco, associate professor of history at Pitt. Since coming to Pitt in 1969, Glasco has focused on African-American history, both locally and globally. He has studied the history of Black Pittsburgh for the past decade and is currently working on a biography of August Wilson. In 2016, he appeared in the PBS documentary about Wilson.

Leah Mickens, August Wilson Project archivist, University Library System.

Ousmane Sène, director, West African Research Center in Senegal, and associate professor of American literature at Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar (University of Dakar).

Sandra Shannon, founder and president, August Wilson Society; professor emerita of African American literature, Howard University. Shannon is widely acknowledged as a major scholar in the field of African American drama and the leading authority on playwright August Wilson

The panel will be moderated by Diael Thomas, August Wilson outreach and engagement curator for the University of Pittsburgh Library System.
