New associate deans named for Pitt Business

Gene Anderson, who took over as dean of the Katz Graduate School of Business and College of Business Administration one year ago, is moving ahead with a new strategic plan — “Pitt Business 2030.”

The plans phase one goals include growing undergraduate business education, optimizing the school’s master’s portfolio, strengthening interdisciplinary partnerships, and building a One Pitt Business approach to integrating and collaborating across all programs.

Program-specific goals include ensuring preparation for internships, offering relevant experience-based learning opportunities, and increasing participation in study abroad and study away.

To achieve these goals and objectives, Anderson has appointed faculty members to new leadership assignments, along with their teaching duties. Those appointments, effective July 1 unless noted otherwise, include:

Sara Moeller, senior associate dean for teaching and learning: Moeller will be responsible for envisioning educational offerings across the undergraduate, master’s and executive education portfolio, fostering educational partnerships across campus and with the business community, and championing a One Pitt Business approach. Moeller previously was associate dean for graduate and executive programs.

Deborah Good, associate dean for undergraduate business education: Good will lead undergraduate programs, collaborate closely with staff units supporting these offerings, and work with the area directors, undergraduate program committee, and governing faculty to further enhance the program’s quality and reputation in close collaboration with Moeller. (Effective Sept. 1, 2023).

Good replaces Larry Feick, who has been serving as interim associate dean of the College of Business Administration. Feick — who has filled several roles at Pitt, including interim president of the Bradford and Titusville campuses and, from 2007–15, senior director of international programs and the director of the University Center for International Studies — will transition to a one-year leave at the end of August 2023.

Becky Badawy, associate dean for MBA and specialty masters: Badawy will work closely with staff units supporting those offerings and collaborate with the school’s area directors, master’s program committee, and governing faculty to enhance our portfolio of full-time and part-time programs. She will also collaborate with Moeller on strategy. (Effective Sept. 1, 2023)

Jeff Inman, senior associate dean for research and faculty: This appointment recognizes Inman’s significant contributions and exceptional track record of promoting research excellence. In this role, he will continue to support faculty and work collaboratively to further enhance the school’s research culture. He also will assist with faculty recruitment and retention and oversee reviews, including contract renewals, promotion and tenure, and chair appointments.

Newly created positions

Anderson also has appointed faculty members to three newly created positions for the school.

Paul Harper, associate dean for inclusion, engagement, and international affairs: This highly integrative role will forge strong linkages between inclusion and community engagement initiatives and other strategic priorities and support stronger connections for Pitt Business both locally and globally.

Vanitha Swaminathan, associate dean for strategic initiatives: Swaminathan’s initial priorities in this inaugural appointment include strengthening brand identity and marketing, deepening partnerships with key companies, and advancing new initiatives within our portfolio of educational and research activities.

Sharon Alvarez and Narayan Ramasubbu, Dean’s Faculty Fellows: As the first two in this new role, Alvarez will work on projects related to strengthening faculty development while Ramasubba will help the school advance initiatives related to the content and modality (i.e., online) of our education programs.
