Pitt’s occupational therapy program ranked 1st in nation

The School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences’ occupational therapy program led all of Pitt’s advanced degree offerings with a No. 1 ranking in the 2024 U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools report, released April 9.

It was the first time the occupational therapy program, which was compared to 262 other schools, has achieved that rank, and it was not alone in top 10 for SHRS:

  • Speech-language pathology: 5th out of 280

  • Audiology: 6th out of 73

  • Physical therapy: 8th out of 245

Other health sciences graduate programs also ranked in the top 10 in:

  • Nurse anesthesia: 2nd out of 131

  • Pharmacy: 9th out of 141

The School of Social Work jumped nine spots to 12th in the rankings, out of 319 schools.

The Graduate School of Public and International Affairs also climbed in the public affairs ranking (34) and earned top 50 rankings in the international policy and global administration specialization (6), urban policy (16) and public policy analysis specializations (31).

The Katz Graduate School of Business climbed 39 spots to 47th, out of 236, and its part-time MBA ranking rose eight spots to 35th.

The Swanson School of Engineering also saw some gains. Overall, the Swanson School rose three spots to 44th out of 220. Six engineering specialty programs ranked in the top 50: industrial/manufacturing/systems engineering (24), biomedical engineering/bioengineering (25), chemical engineering (42), environmental/environmental health engineering (48) and mechanical engineering (50).

Three of Pitt Law’s  specialty programs achieved top 50 rankings: Health care law (28), tax law (40) and intellectual property law (48).

The School of Nursing’s Doctor of Nursing Practice psychiatric mental health concentration, which prepares principal nurse practitioners who treat individuals with psychiatric disorders across the lifespan was ranked 5th out of 10 programs.

The U.S. News and World Report evaluates business, education, engineering, law, medicine and nursing advanced degree programs and associated specialties in each category yearly. According to its website, the rankings in these areas are based on two types of data: expert opinions about program excellence and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school's faculty, research and students.
