Race &... Lecture Series plans four speakers this semester

The Race &... Lecture Series — a virtual lunchtime speaker series that introduces and showcases the work of Pitt faculty — will continue this semester.

The lectures are from noon to 1 p.m. The online meeting opens at 11:45 a.m. for networking time before the welcome from leadership at noon. Additional networking in breakout rooms will follow the welcome, and the lecture will begin at approximately 12:15 p.m., followed by a Q&A segment after the lecturer's presentation.

This semester’s series includes:

Jan. 18: Aala Abdelgadir, assistant professor, Department of Political Science, will present “Anti-Muslim Discrimination and the Limits to Equality in Europe.” The aim of the presentation is to discuss research on institutional and social anti-Muslim discrimination and impact on ability of Muslims to participate equally in society.

March 5: Karina Vargas, assistant professor, Department of Cell Biology on “Synuclein regulates synaptic vesicle recycling.”

March 21: Adedoyin Ogunfeyimi, assistant professor of English, on “Photographic Camera Inventions and the Technologies of Being: A Black Rhetorical Critique.” This talk traces the inventional processes of photographic camera types and show how they validate but also terminate Black lifeworld. It will rely on photographic images of the people of African descent around the world.

TBA, 2024: Stacy Bartlett, assistant professor, Department of Family Medicine, on “Improving the Health of Mothers & Birthing People through Interconception & 4th Trimester Care.” Bartlett’s work seeks to develop, study, and improve interconception (between pregnancies) and postpartum models of care to improve the health of mothers/birthing people and infants and close the racial gap in maternal and infant morbidity and mortality
