Student loan forgiveness workshops planned throughout fall

TIAA and student loan experts at Savi are holding seminars to help Pitt employees navigate the complexities of federal student loan programs such as Public Service Loan Forgiveness — a federal program for people who work in public service or for a nonprofit organization.

The live and interactive free online webinars and Q&A sessions with student loan experts be held several times throughout the fall semester. They are designed to help you understand your best repayment options, learn the basics of student loans and find out if you qualify for forgiveness. The next one is at 2 p.m. Sept. 20. Register here. For more dates, check the University calendar.

Pitt employees also can sit down with a Savi representative to get a free assessment and help combing through the more than 150 state and federal forgiveness programs to find repayment plans that could help reduce monthly payments. More than 1,140 Pitt employees have used the service so far, saving an average of $117 per month.

Federal student loan interest accrual resumes on Sept. 1 and payments begin in October, after being paused during the pandemic. The Biden administration had proposed a one-time student debt relief plan, but the Supreme Court issued a decision in July blocking that plan.
